What is an Order Cheque? Meaning & Example

March 20, 20264 min read

An order cheque is a cheque payable only to the person named on it, or to whomever they order it to be paid. It is created by striking off the word "bearer" on the cheque.

How an order cheque works

When "bearer" is cancelled, the bank pays only the named payee (after verifying identity) or a person to whom the payee has endorsed the cheque by signing on the back.

Example

A cheque reads "Pay Suresh or bearer". Only Suresh can collect the money, or he can endorse it to someone else by signing the reverse.

Order cheque vs bearer cheque

  • Bearer cheque — anyone holding it can encash it.
  • Order cheque — only the named payee or their endorsee.

Order cheques are safer than bearer cheques. For maximum safety, also make it a crossed cheque.
