What is a Self Cheque? How to Write One (with Example)

April 22, 20263 min read

A self cheque is a cheque you write to yourself to withdraw cash from your own bank account. In the payee line you write "Self" instead of another person's name.

How to write a self cheque

  1. In the "Pay" line, write "Self".
  2. Write the amount in words and figures.
  3. Date and sign the cheque as registered with your bank.
  4. Present it at your bank branch to collect cash.

Example

To withdraw ₹10,000 from your own account, write "Pay Self ₹10,000" and sign it. The bank gives you the cash.

Precautions

  • A self cheque is like cash — if lost, anyone may encash it. Do not pre-sign blank self cheques.
  • Never cross a self cheque if you want to withdraw cash at the counter.
